My bass and drum tracks are just MIDI notes that I build with Reaper's piano roll.

Maybe it has some interesting presets (like drums, piano, bass) in which case I just have to chose that "bass" preset to play bass with my piano roll's built MIDI track ? But in that page they say it has problems with MIDI. Just seeing all those buttons already gives me headache I just googled ZynAddSubFX and came across this page: The advantage of synth is that they are much more expressive than samplers and you can transform the sound during a riff etc etc.Ī top notch synthesizer like ZynAddSubFX has incredible range and can sound like everything from a church organ to distorted guitar to the most beautiful strings and of course synth sounds so that would be my recommendation as it has a lot of presets you can just choose from.īut whether they are synths or samplers, it's just a matter of loading them as FX on a track and selecting a preset in their preset browser and voila. Sometimes it can actually be made to sound very close to real acoustic instruments, but for the most part they are used to make the typical synth sounds which of course no acoustic instrument can match. I believe Cakewalk's Studio Instruments are using samples.Ī synthesizer makes sound from scratch through electronic circuitry. The advantage is that the piano will of course sound like a real piano etc etc. Yes samples are just recorded audio files from a real instrument (but sometimes synths too) that you can play back. As a plugin, I insert the desired instrument (one of those 4) into my track. I just have to click once to get to the desired instrument page.

Just for you to know, the Cakewalk's Studio Instruments has 4 kinds of sounds: drums, bass, piano and strings. Is Cakewalk's Studio Instruments (that I currently use) a sample or a synthesized product ?Īs I told you, I know nothing about synth programming so in either case, the product should be ready to give me drums and bass sounds at least and preferably in addition some other cool sounds like strings and other instruments (piano, percussion, sax, horns, etc.). Would you please explain me what's the difference between samples and synthesized sounds ? pros/cons ? Are samples just "pre-recorded" notes ? The best 5 free synths of all in my opinion. Do you want samples or synthesized sounds?įor samples, there's Sampletank free and Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra, as well as Piano One and Orchestral Strings One.įor free synths with lots and varied presets, there's my favorite ZynAddSubFX that can sound both acoustic and synthy, but try also Synth1, Zebralette, Free Alpha, and DUNE BE.
